BIO

Steven May is an AFL player who currently plays for the Melbourne Football Club and is of Indigenous Australian descent from Gunbalanya and Larrakia. Steven made his AFL debut against Essendon in 2011 and finished nine games under his belt. In 2012 had a breakout game against Hawthorn when he was moved forward and kicked three goals and took 12 marks. Steven was named co-captain of the Gold Coast Football Club in December 2016, becoming the sixth indigenous captain in VFL/AFL history. In Round 10 of the 2017 season, he wore the number 67 on his guernsey instead of his usual 17 to commemorate the 1967 referendum that allowed Indigenous Australians to be counted in the census. Steven was traded to Melbourne at the end of the 2018 season and played a crucial role in the victorious Melbourne side against the Western Bulldogs in the 2021 AFL Grand Final, despite having to play with a serious hamstring injury.
